Event Details

Genesee Center for the Arts & Education is hosting the 2nd Annual Upstate New York Wayzgoose on Saturday June 4, 2016 from noon to 5pm. It is a celebration of printing and the book arts featuring hands-on workshops, demonstrations, vendor fair, tours, food & libations!

A Wayzgoose is a celebration of printing, paper and book arts. Its name goes back to medieval times when the master printer would host a feast for his workers.

As always, we are grateful for our amazing volunteers! HUGE thank you to: Mariah Pfeiffer, Geri McCormick, Bill Dexter, Judy Kierig, Rachel Oatridge, Roy Sowers and Amelia Hugill-Fontanel for helping us make the Wayzgoose possible this year.

Keep in touch! RSVP to our Facebook Event & sign-up for our newsletter.

The 2nd Annual Upstate New York Wayzgoose is supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities.

Patricia Cost wrote The Bentons: How an American Father and Son Changed the Printing Industry (RIT Press, 2011), and is revising Amelia Prints a Greeting Card. Cost has a master's degree in printing technology from RIT, is the sole proprietor of Fossil Press, and also works as an editor.

The tradition of printers using a logo or mark on their work goes back almost to the beginning of printing itself. Cost's talk is a brief sojourn through the history of printers' marks. In tracing their history, one encounters the major people and events that together shaped the history of printing.

Herb Johnson, a graduate of RIT’s School of Printing, was Book Designer and Art Director at Alfred A. Knopf, Publishers; Production Manager, and later Director of Design and Production at Macmillan & Co. He was also the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Distinguished Professors at RIT’s School of Printing, and later on the RIT School of Printing regular faculty.

Johnson will speak on "Frederick Douglass the Printer".
