SpiroXyloGraphics (Letterpress Adventures on the Angle Chase)

The elusive angle chase of the mid 20th century by Challenge Machinery is legendary among letterpress printers. It allows for a printing form to be rotated to any angle in the bed of a press!

Dry Inc has revived this lost artifact as a 3-D printed tool. Using all 3 angle chase size options created by Dry Inc. (18.5 pica, 35 pica, and 60 pica), students will learn how to break out of the 90 degree angle confines of a traditional letterpress lockup. There will be a brief introduction on the development of the tool itself as well as examples shown of alternative angle chase tools.

After discussion on various approaches to using the angle chase, participants will divide into teams to select wood type from the Flower City Arts printshop to create their own art prints which can vary from simple modernist angles to complex overprinting that is reminiscent of the late 20th century Spirograph art toy. Participants of any skill level may attend.
