Intro to Lighting Studio Photography

Intro to Lighting Studio Photography image

Learn the fundamentals of studio lighting in this three-session class using the Westcott strobe system at the Flower City Arts Center Photography Studio.

This class begins with a technical orientation to the studio and lighting equipment. Students will learn how to properly set up and operate the Westcott strobes and triggers, move between TTL and manual mode, manage channels and groups, and safely work with light stands, booms, and modifiers. We'll explore essential lighting concepts for portraits and product photography, including hard vs. soft light, flash vs. constant light, exposure with a flash meter, and how to shape light using reflectors, flags, v-flats, umbrellas, and soft boxes.

The class concludes with hands-on studio practice, where you’ll create portraits, headshots, dramatic lighting setups, and still-life or product images while refining your technical and creative control. Bring the camera you plan to use, digital or film.

Ideal for photographers ready to build confidence and skill in the studio.

Upon completing this course, FCAC members are eligible to use the lighting studio and Westcott lighting equipment.
