RISO Zines

A zine (pronounced "zeen," short for magazine or fanzine) is a small, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images. Rooted in early 20th century science fiction fan communities, zines gained wider recognition during the punk scene of the 1970s and 80s and have remained central to DIY subcultures and grassroots movements ever since.

In this workshop, students will explore zine making using the Risograph duplicator — a stencil-based printing machine originally designed for low-cost, high-volume copying. Risograph duplicators have become a beloved tool in the indie publishing world.

Students will learn various zine structures, including one-page folds and multi-page formats, while creating source materials through collage and hand-drawn illustration. Participants will leave class having printed one edition of 2-color zines.
