Domesticated Fire is the work of four potters. Julie Crosby (Trumansburg, NY), Fred Herbst (Corning, NY), and Liz Lurie (Cazenovia, NY) wood-fire their work, while Randall Carlson (Illinois) salt fires. These processes are atmospheric: the kiln is stoked with wood for hours--even days--and the ash or salt deposits onto the body of the piece, producing a subtle sheen and the marks of the fire. The unique surfaces of the ceramic work reveals the history of what happened in the kiln during firing.
All pieces exhibited will be utilitarian and commonly used kitchen items including bowls, vases, and pitchers.
