In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we invite you to stop by our Book Arts Studio this Tuesday - Friday (Jan. 17 - Jan. 20) between 11am - 2pm to print your own poster highlighting a quote from King's book, "Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story."

"Stride Towards Freedom" is an historic account of the 1955 – 1956 Montgomery bus boycott. In the book's second chapter, King recounts his response to a white Montgomery resident asking him why the boycotters came "in to destroy" the city's "peaceful and harmonious race relations." King stated:

"'Sir, [...] you have never had real peace in Montgomery. You have had a sort of negative peace in which the Negro too often accepted his state of subordination. But this is not true peace. True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice. The tension we see in Montgomery today is the necessary tension that comes when the oppressed rise up and start to move forward toward a permanent, positive peace.” Want to read more? You can borrow the book via the Monroe County Library System or online via the Internet Archive.

This drop-in event is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you at 713 Monroe Ave!
