Chika Winston

2025 Photography & Digital Arts Resident

Chika Winston is a photographer, designer, and organizer from….. no one really knows (they don’t even know themself). Going to 13 different schools between 2 continents before the age of 18 does that to a person. They are a self-proclaimed professional “hang-outer,” disappearing and reappearing within the blink of an eye. Winston received their BFA in Art Photography from Syracuse University and currently… hanging out (I’m figuring it out!!!). They have exhibited at numerous places, most notably their work exploring the mosh pit (Kickstart: Ongoing) in Tokyo, Japan. Other places include The Everson Museum of Art, The Gear Factory, and Lightwork. The driving force of their practice stems from their experience as a mutual aid organizer and growing up in subversive environments, exploring ways in which found families and communities are created. With an intense allegiance to DIY-or Die, they have a deep desire to speak on the darker side of the human experience with poetic nuances. Their playful approach doesn’t shy them away from sticking to one medium, allowing them to use sculpture, collage, performance, and installation to force viewers into a deep state of destabilizing, rumbling emotions.
