Summer Camp: Teen Zine

Summer Camp: Teen Zine image

Create your own zine in this exciting new collaboration between Flower City Arts Center and Writers & Books. Short for magazines, zines are small circulations of self-published books, which historically have aided in the advancement of ideas throughout communities since the 1930s. Journalist Britta Lokting describes zines as a way for young adults to “solidify their stance in society.” Creativity abounds as you share your perspectives on the world around you. Each morning, with the guidance of a writer from Writers & Books, you’ll brainstorm and engage in a variety of writing prompts and activities to create written content for your zine. In the afternoon, you will work with a visual artist at Flower City Arts Center to create the visual elements, design, and layout for your zine. We will explore the use of text, hand drawn art, photography, illustration, and collage (digital and analog) while learning about how design can be used to support our messages. Each zine will be printed on Flower City Arts Center’s risograph printer as a two-color, traditional 8 page fold zine. Students will receive a copy of each other’s zine as well as 10 copies of their own to distribute and/ or trade.

• Required: Access to a computer with internet connection. Zines will be created using a free online application called Photopea.
